Man Mo Temple, Hong Kong

From Michelle,
Hong Kong

In the dimly lit temple, a completely unearthly atmosphere thanks to incense and carved wooden panels, whimsically decorated with ceramic figures and frescoes. This hidden among the residential towers is the oldest and perhaps the most famous temple in Hong Kong. The temple was built from 1847 to 1862 on the initiative of rich Chinese merchants and is dedicated to the gods of literature and war. These gods were revered by ambitious students who were preparing for the passing of strict state examinations in imperial China, which opened the way to a government career.
